Slewfoot: A Tale of Bewitchery by Gerald Brom
- forever sad about Edward. do we understand why it is that he was without eyes? what was keeping him tethered? was it to do because of his link to Samson or was it because of Abitha?
- didn't love that the Peqot were made linked/associated only to real demon of the story. feel like maybe that could have been handled better
- love Samson honestly. even when he was evil at the start lol
- did i fall for the trick? did i also believe that stupid masked bitch when he said the wildfolk were the real evil? yes sadly i was swayed. i'd be captured and imprisoned in my own skull mask bleugh
- "it is time to be magnificent"
- i hate wallace so much he deserved to die the same death a million times over
- hate the townspeople. hate that the women who benefited and asked for help from abitha ultimately betrayed her
- abitha kept saying that she died once she drank of Samson's blood and united with Mother Earth but i think she didnt really until she ACTUALLy died and came back cause of Pawpaw's magic
- am not okay about the kitty being killed like that
- seeing the paintings afterwards wow oh wow
- the reverend and sara surprised me. although i am sad that she felt betrayed by abitha in the end. i guess? that would be realistic enough but still painful.
- did in fact cry when the reverend and samson were both praying to their own gods for abitha to be saved.
- i would like to think the sheriff wasnt killed- he was kinder than most. same as the reverand and his wife
- a lot of different elements throughout reminded me of princess mononoke. with the spirit of the forest
- life AND death being balance, reminding me of the indigenous teachings surrounding hunting and also gathering and the relationship between man and nature. i think thats another reason why the handling of the native americans in the story felt off to me.
- i have mixed feelings about Forest. honestly will always be sad and bitter about Edward alas i also understand his plight. and in the end he sacrificed his life for the good of the species
key messages?
- we need to decide who are even when others are thrusting their own ideas of who we are on us. it is our decision to make. regardless of others perceptions
- the ease in which man is corrupted and yet still believes he is just. (see: Most of the time the person being evil genuinely believes they are being good_E. Beaton)
- the ease with which man will twist the Bible and God's word to commit atrocities
- the need for balance. death is sad and sometimes violent but it also a natural course of life (this needs to be expanded upon a bit more. im not expressing this correctly)
- importance of companionship vs the dangers of it
- capitalism is the root of all evil

Book Synopsis
A spirited young Englishwoman, Abitha, arrives at a Puritan colony betrothed to a stranger – only to become quickly widowed when her husband dies under mysterious circumstances. All alone in this pious and patriarchal society, Abitha fights for what little freedom she can grasp onto, while trying to stay true to herself and her past.
Enter Slewfoot, a powerful spirit of antiquity newly woken ... and trying to find his own role in the world. Healer or destroyer? Protector or predator? But as the shadows walk and villagers start dying, a new rumor is whispered: Witch.
Both Abitha and Slewfoot must swiftly decide who they are, and what they must do to survive in a world intent on hanging any who meddle in the dark arts.
